Special City Council meeting scheduled

A Special City Council meeting has been scheduled for Monday, August 16, 2010 at 6:00 pm. Mayor and Council will discuss and vote on the following agenda items:

  • • Disposition Agreements related to 1 Liberty Street (Liberty Street School), 5 Johnes Street and 9 Johnes Street
  • • Change Order related to the building demolition on the property located at 210 Mill Street (former Provan Ford site)

The meeting will be held in the third floor City Council Chambers located at 83 Broadway, City Hall, Newburgh, New York.

A City-to-City Community Art Installation

The Bluff @ Bay View Terrace

July 15th 5:30pm – 8:30pm

Cities of Promise: 1000 Peace Flags, sponsored by SUNY Orange, is a temporary community-engaged art installation by Susan Handler Konvit. The youth and residents of Newburgh and Middletown, New York, will be guided through the making of this city-wide exhibit culminating in a burst of 1000 brilliant colored flags in each city with their handwritten words of commitment and inspiration waving proudly outside their homes throughout the neighborhoods.

Pete Seeger concert to benefit Habitat for Humanity

City Council meetings scheduled

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Mayor Nicholas Valentine and Acting City Manager, Richard F. Herbek, have called two meetings of the City Council for Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 6pm and Friday, June 25, 2010 at 6pm in order to discuss and adopt a home rule request for proposed legislation known as the City of Newburgh Fiscal Recovery Act.

Both meetings will be held in the third floor City Council Chambers located at 83 Broadway, City Hall, Newburgh, New York.

The public is invited to attend.

Ann Street Market

To promote the revitalization of Newburgh’s downtown area, Safe Harbors of the Hudson is pleased to announce that they will be holding their 4th Annual Ann Street Market Series throughout the summer and fall. The first market of the season will be held this Saturday, June 26 from 10 AM to 4 PM.

The markets will bring fresh, local food and art to a community in need. They will also provide a wonderful opportunity for Newburgh residents to come together and rediscover the city’s historic downtown district.

They are currently seeking local farms and farmers, food purveyors, artists, artisans, musicians, local organizations and businesses, etc. to participate in the market series.

The remaining markets of the season will be held on the following Saturdays in 2010:
June 26, July 31, August 28, September 25, October 30

The markets will take place in the Ann Street municipal parking lot (located across the street from the Ann Street Gallery at 104 Ann Street). In case of rain, the market will be held inside the Ritz Theater Lobby at 107 Broadway.

The Green Wave

The Ann Street Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibit, The Green Wave: Sustainability & Found Object Exhibition, with an Artist Reception on Saturday, June 26, 2010 from 6:00–9:00 PM.

The “green wave” trend has reached massive status in the U.S. as websites crop up all over the internet, organizations take a contemporary stance focusing on ecology, and celebrities advocate for ecological changes. In this exhibition, through their work, ten artists: David Borenstein, Rik Catlow, Deborah Colotti, David Edgar, Janice Gordon, Brooke Holve, Julie Kornblum, Todd Knopke, Patianne Stevenson, and Stuart Wagner, work to communicate new meanings and interpretations about sustainability.

One Liberty Street status presentation

A presentation on the status of One Liberty Street (School No. 6) will be held this Saturday, June 26th, from 12:30–1:30 PM. The event will be held at 55 Liberty Street and will offer a glimpse of the planning and vision for units under development at One Liberty Street. It is sponsored by Bluestone Developers, Bluestone Real Estate Partners and Associates, and The Green September.

A Day of Architectural History in Newburgh, NY

This Saturday, June 26th, celebrate the renowned architecture of Newburgh with a day of talks by experts in the field at significant architectural sites within the city’s East End Historic District.

10:00 AM: Newburgh’s Architectural Treasure Trove: Why Here? (Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, Museum Building, corner of Liberty and Washington Streets)
1:30 PM: Calvert Vaux (Newburgh City Club/Culbert House, 120 Grand Street)
2:30 PM: Alexander Jackson Davis (Dutch Reformed Church, 134 Grand Street)
4:30 PM: Andrew Jackson Downing of Newburgh and American Nationalism (Courthouse/Newburgh Heritage Center, 123 Grand Street)

Tickets can be purchased on site at each event—admission is $15 for each talk, $50 for the entire day. Ticket prices include lunch discounts at several fine Newburgh eating establishments: Beebs, Caffé Macchiato or Torches on the Hudson with your ticket stub and the mention of Calvert Vaux.
